Founded over 25 years ago, the Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) exists to ensure Black journalists rise to the top in every facet of this industry. Our mission is to increase representation through education and inspiration. As Black journalists, we are a united voice advocating for change in Canadian news, dismantling systems of anti-Black racism and working to increase the number of independent Black journalism professionals.
Position: Executive Director
Salary: $35,000
Hours: Contract (August 1, 2024 start), Part-time
We are currently seeking a strong and capable leader to take over the role of executive director of the CABJ. This individual must be a builder, with a proven ability to increase the organization’s reach and relationships, build community within the organization, supporting our members with a strong voice in the fight against anti-Black systemic racism.
This individual is responsible for overseeing all four of our national programs: CABJ Connects, J-School Noire, RISE Conference and CABJ Media Startup Bootcamp. This incoming executive director must be committed to listening to, advocating for, and responding to the needs of Black journalists within our organization and across Canada. They will lead the coordination of new and existing local and national partnerships, assessing opportunities and carrying a deep understanding of how our programs fit within the journalism ecosystem.
Responsibilities include:
Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Canadian Association of Black Journalists
Hiring and overseeing volunteers to carry out the necessary tasks associated with each program
Identifying (or working with a grant writer to identify) grants and funding opportunities
Initiating collaborations and developing partnerships with like-minded organizations focused on increasing the number of Black journalists across the industry
Meet regularly with directors, and volunteers to review and develop programming, understanding each program’s unique goals and needs
Lead monthly team meetings and quarterly Board meetings
Maintain positive working relationships with community partner agencies
Advocating publicly against anti-Black racism in Canadian news media and working with like-minded individuals and organizations to dismantle systems of racism
Qualifications:
Proven experience working in Canada’s nonprofit sector
History of managing teams (staff or volunteers)
Proven project management experience
Capable of managing large organizational projects and budgets
Excellent public speaker capable of advocating against anti-Black racism. Experience writing public statements and asset
A compassionate leader with the capacity to navigate complex situations
Dynamic individual who can approach leadership through a Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) lens
Journalism, Communications, or Business experience considered an asset
