Furqan Mohamed
Bio
Furqan Mohamed is a Black Muslim, student, writer, and activist. Her work focuses on issues surrounding culture, politics, and social justice. She currently serves as a Staff Writer for TOP Magazine, and is a former Web Editor for Teen Eye Magazine. She is an editor for the Toronto Public Library’s Young Voices Magazine. In 2017, Mohamed was a keynote speaker at the Youth & Justice Congress, with the Toronto International Film Festival to create a visual accompaniment for her spoken word piece. In September of 2019, she was a panel speaker at an Equity Roundtable discussion at the Toronto Reference Library, and later spoke at the annual Canadian Civil Liberties Association’s student workshops and conference, on the topic of ethical activism at Central Technical School. Her long-form essays, poetry, and prose can be read online at various websites such as Amaliah, Pure Nowhere, and Trick Magazine. Her essay “Serena Williams: A Case Study In Misogynoir” for Teen Eye was cited in the New York Times bestselling book, “Me and White Supremacy” by Layla. F Saad. For Mimp Magazine, Furqan interviewed Member of Provincial Parliament Jill Andrew and her partner, Aisha Fairclough. Her writing is in print for Mimp Magazine, Ephemera Magazine, Vault Zine, Feels Zine, Re: Magazine, and in upcoming issues of Return Trip Magazine, Maggie, and Room Magazine. She is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, pursuing a double major in English and Women and Gender Studies, and a minor in Creative Expression and Society.
